Nick Lang, dont la célébrité à Hollywood n’est plus à faire, décide de donner un nouvel élan à sa carrière en incarnant dans son prochain film un policier au caractère bien trempé. Pour cela, il part à New-York rejoindre celui dont il sera momentanément le coéquipier attentif : le vrai policier John Moss. L’inexpérience de l’un et les intrépidités de l’autre vont les entraîner dans de nombreuses péripéties…
